Repêchage® Skin Care was founded in 1980, pioneering the use of sustainably harvested seaweed to benefit skin all around the world. In 1996, Lydia created Rapidex® Marine Exfoliator to provide a controlled application process after observing that clients were over-exfoliating their skin. Why Seaweed? Our CEO and Founder, Lydia Sarfati a.k.a. the “Queen of Seaweed,” first fell in love with seaweed during a trip to Israel with her husband in the 1970’s. While enjoying a delicious salad and fresh fruit, Lydia questioned how such a dry climate was capable of producing delicious flavors. Lydia’s curiosity led her to discover that the farming community was using seaweed as a bio stimulant and fertilizer. Lydia went on a mission to learn more about this miracle from the sea. After meeting with seaweed harvesters and marine biologists in France, it became evident that seaweed was the most complete and natural source for health, beauty, and wellness, and was going to be her focus for skin care. In skin care, specific seaweeds can be used to create a number of cosmetic benefits: • Diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles • Exfoliating the skin for a more luminous looking complexion • Moisturizing the skin to make it look and feel soft and smooth And what exactly makes seaweed so special? Seaweed has no roots, so it feeds through osmosis, absorbing minerals and vitamins from the seawater. Because of this process, seaweed becomes a dense concentration of: • Vitamins • Minerals • Trace Elements • Macro Elements • Phyto-hormones • Amino Acids • Fucodains • Phlorotannins Sustainably Harvested Seaweeds Repêchage® seaweed is sustainably harvested from the coast of Maine, USA and France. It is then processed through a proprietary method at our headquarters in Secaucus, New Jersey to deliver all the benefits from the sea to the skin. There are two methods through which seaweed can be obtained: wild harvesting or through aquaculture. Wild harvesting takes place early in the morning, during the lowest tides of the spring and summer months that accompany the new and full moons. Through aquaculture, seaweed is grown on ropes suspended in seawater and harvested by boat along floating lines and gathered into nets or large storage bins. Crops are harvested over a period of a month or two until temperature conditions limit the growth of the crop. The seaweed is initially stored in wet chambers then dried at temperatures that minimize degradation of bioreactive compounds. We have worked with leading scientists and aquaculturists to sustainably harvest several species of nutrient-rich seaweed. In 2015, Charles Yarish, Ph.D. and Professor in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and Department of Marine Sciences, University of Connecticut, Stamford, became a consultant to the Repêchage® Board of Directors, working with the Sarfati family to create harvesting possibilities right here in the USA. As a leading environmentalist and aquaculturist, Dr. Yarish is sharing his research with us to help create sustainable, seaweed harvests that can benefit both us and the ocean. Made in the USA: Repêchage® Seaweed Extraction Process Most manufacturers of seaweed-based products use the oven drying method of processing. This method yields a product, which contains trace elements, but may be deficient in vitamins that are heat sensitive, and lack many of the benefits of seaweed. This is where our extraction process makes all the difference. Once sun dried, the seaweed is packed and sent to our ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturing facility in Secaucus, NJ, USA, where our proprietary extraction method is used to retain essential, vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, Biotin, Folic Acid, B12, C, E, K, Beta Carotene) trace elements and minerals (Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Silver, Strontium, Sulfur, Zinc) amino acids and other nutrients, converting the pure filtrate into small batches. It’s this unique step that sets our skin care apart from every other product line. After six months the liquid reaches its full potency and is then incorporated into Repêchage® products. Nothing is purer or more effective at helping skin look and feel softer, smoother, more balanced, and rejuvenated. Repêchage® Seaweeds Backed by scientific research on different species of sea plants, Lydia created an extensive product line based on the unique properties of several species of seaweeds, with each species influenced by the oceanic regions where they grow. Of the more than 40,000 species of seaweed world-wide, we’ve selected Laminaria Digitata and Ascophyllum Nodosum seaweeds, both sustainably harvested in Maine, and eleven other seaweeds that are sourced from pristine waters in France.
